Hula (dance) is telling a story through the movements and gestures which typically depict the words in a mele (song) or oli (chant). Whether the words be of honoring a god/goddess or Hawaiian royalty or describing a beautiful place or object or even love/admiration for someone. Dance lessons focus on learning, practicing and building upon basic hula steps and gestures. Time is spent on warm-ups, hula step drills, learning and practicing new (and previous) dances, learning about and using hula implements (depending on hula being taught), Hawaiian/Polynesian cultures, 'olelo (language), oli (chant), mele (song), food and costuming and crafting.
